The Foundation of Healthy Hair: Science-Led Scalp Care Inspired by Skincare

If there's one skincare combination I recommend more than any other, it's this one. Vitamin C in the morning, SPF on top. Every single day. Not occasionally, not when you remember. Every day.

And let me tell you why...

ANTIOXIDANTS - ONE OF THE CORE FOUR

Vitamin C is an antioxidant.

Its job is to neutralise free radicals, the unstable molecules generated by UV exposure, pollution and environmental stress that break down collagen and accelerate skin ageing. It's one of the most researched and most effective ingredients in skincare and the evidence behind it is genuinely strong.

Vitamin C is not the antioxidant for everyone. If you're unsure which antioxidant to use, read this blog post first.

BUT MOST PEOPLE DON'T KNOW THIS...

Vitamin C is light-sensitive. UV exposure degrades it.

So if you apply your Vitamin C serum in the morning and then walk out into daylight without SPF, you're actively undermining the ingredient you just applied.

The UV that your Vit C is trying to protect you from is simultaneously destroying the Vit C itself.

ENTER SPF

SPF changes that equation entirely.

When you apply SPF over your Vitamin C, you're protecting the Vitamin C from degradation so it can do its job properly throughout the day. The two ingredients don't just coexist, they actively amplify each other. Studies have shown that the combination of Vitamin C and SPF provides significantly better protection against UV-induced skin damage than either ingredient alone.

The other thing worth knowing is that Vitamin C helps repair UV damage that's already been done. It supports collagen synthesis, helps fade pigmentation and post-inflammatory marks, and brightens the overall tone of skin. SPF prevents new damage from occurring. Together they're working on both sides of the same problem.

HOW TO LAYER THEM

Apply your Vitamin C serum first onto clean skin and let it absorb for a minute or two. Then apply your SPF on top. That's it. No complicated timing, no special technique.

If you find that your Vitamin C and SPF pill or separate on your skin, it's usually a formulation issue rather than a layering issue. Try a different SPF texture. A lightweight fluid or gel SPF tends to layer better than a thick cream.

Which Vitamin C and which SPF

Not all Vitamin C products are equal.

L-ascorbic acid is the gold standard, it's the most researched form and the most potent, but it's also the most unstable and can oxidise quickly if not formulated properly. Products like SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic and Phloretin CF are formulated specifically to maximise stability and efficacy. The Obagi C Fx Clarifying Serum also contains L-Ascorbic Acid and is great for stubborn pigmentation.

If you're newer to Vitamin C or have more sensitive skin, the Medik8 C-Tetra range uses a more stable form of Vitamin C that's gentler and still very effective.

FOR SPF

Any broad-spectrum SPF50 applied generously will do the job.

Consistency matters more than the specific product. The best SPF is the one you'll actually wear every day. The La Roche-Posay Anthelios range is one I recommend constantly for everyday use. The Colorscience Face Shield range is brilliant for anyone who wants SPF with a little coverage or glow.

STOP WASTING YOUR MONEY.

The bottom line is simple. If you're investing in a Vitamin C serum and not wearing SPF every day, you're wasting half of what that serum can do. Add the SPF. Your skin will thank you.
