WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

The Bookends: Cleansers and Moisturisers in your Skincare Routine

Part Two of Our Four-Part Series on Building the Ideal Skincare Routine

In case you missed it, Part One of our skincare education series covered the Core Four—the four key ingredients I believe everyone should have in their routine: SPF, an antioxidant, a retinoid, and an exfoliating acid. These are the actives that deliver results. But what about the products that support them?

Enter the Bookends of your skincare routine: your cleanser and moisturiser.

I call them the bookends because they sit at either end of your routine—they’re essential for keeping everything intact, but they’re not where you need to focus your spending. If you’re trying to save a bit of money, this is where you can do it. Your serums and actives are where you’ll get the most return on investment. That said, a well-chosen cleanser and moisturiser can make all the difference in how your actives perform—and how your skin feels day to day.

Let's break them down.

Cleansers: Clean, but not Stripped

There are tons of cleansers on the market—and I am a massive fan of cream-based cleansers. Gone are the days when we wanted our skin to feel squeaky clean. That tight, dry feeling? It means your skin barrier is being stripped of its natural oils—not good.

What we want instead is skin that feels nourished, calm, and balanced after cleansing. Cream and oil-based cleansers help achieve this, especially for dry or sensitive skin types. Gel cleansers can work too, but just make sure they’re not too harsh.

Should you Cleanse Morning & Evening?

Absolutely.

Here’s why:

In the morning: Sweat, pillow grime, and overnight buildup sit on your skin when you wake up. If you’re spending money on a good vitamin C serum, you want it to penetrate properly—so start with a quick, gentle cleanse.

In the evening: It’s all about the double cleanse. The first cleanse removes makeup, SPF, and surface dirt. The second cleanse gets to your skin. Mix and match if you like—oil first, cream second, or whatever combo works for you.

Even dry skin types can double cleanse, provided you’re using gentle, nourishing formulas.

You can also use active-based cleansers—for example, salicylic acid for acne-prone skin, or a gentle exfoliating enzyme-based cleanser for dull skin. They’re a great way to start your routine with a little boost.

Once your serums have done their work, your moisturiser steps in to seal everything in. It doesn’t need to be fancy—but it does need to be functional.

Ingredients to Look Out For

Ceramides: Help restore and protect your skin barrier

Urea: Excellent for hydration and mild exfoliation

Fatty acids: Nourish and replenish the skin

Hyaluronic acid: (bonus) Attracts and holds water in the skin.

You don’t always need to pick a moisturiser “for your skin type.” For example, if you’re using prescription acne creams, you might need a more nourishing, richer moisturiser—even if you’re oily or breakout-prone. The rest of your routine matters.

Morning and night, moisturising is non-negotiable. Just make sure your SPF is a separate product in the morning. (We’ll get deeper into SPF again when we talk about morning routines in Part Three.)

Bottom Line: Keep it Simple, Keep it Smart

Cleanser and moisturiser may not have the wow-factor of a retinoid or antioxidant—but they’re foundational. Get them right, and everything else in your routine works better.
