SIGNS YOUR SKIN BARRIER IS DAMAGED

Something I talk about all the time is knowing your skin and listening to it. I want to break down how to recognise when your skin needs support, not stronger products. I see it all of the time in Clinic - let's get into it.

Ever notice that your skin "randomly" starts stinging? Or your skin just feels different?

The skin may feel tighter, more sensitive or slightly unpredictable. Some people notice more breakouts, while others feel their skin has simply become harder to manage.

I hear and see this all of the time in clinic. Lots of people think they need to "up the ante" when it comes to skincare. However, more often, it is a sign that the skin barrier is under stress.

WHAT THE SKIN BARRIER DOES

The skin barrier is the outer layer of the skin. Its role is to keep hydration in and irritants out.

When it is functioning well, the skin feels comfortable, balanced and has a healthy glow.

When it becomes disrupted, the skin loses water more easily and becomes more reactive to both products and the environment.

HOW TO TELL IF YOUR SKIN BARRIER IS DAMAGED

There is rarely one single sign. It is usually a combination of changes.

WHY THIS HAPPENS

Barrier disruption usually develops gradually rather than overnight.

Common contributing factors include over-cleansing, over-exfoliating, layering multiple active ingredients and environmental exposure such as UV and pollution.

Hormonal changes, including perimenopause, can also play a role.

If this sounds familiar, it is often worth stepping back and looking at the routine as a whole. This is something I also touched on in habits that might be making your skin worse, where small everyday behaviours can have a bigger impact than expected.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

If several of these signs feel familiar, the most helpful next step is usually to simplify your routine.

Reducing actives, focusing on hydration and supporting the skin barrier allows the skin to recover more effectively. More on this next week!

This is where a structured approach can help. If you need our guidance on building a routine or choosing the right products, try a PHARE Consultation with a therapist from Dr. Laura Clinic.

A FINAL NOTE

Skin that is not behaving as expected does not always need stronger products.

Often, it needs less interference and more support.

Recognising when the barrier is under stress is the first step. Supporting it properly is what allows the skin to return to a more stable state.

I'm working on a Barrier Reset Routine so come back for that next week!
