RESET TIRED SKIN

“Tired skin” is something people mention to me all the time in clinic. Interestingly, it rarely has anything to do with sleep. What most people mean is that their skin looks flat, dull or slightly uneven. It might feel a bit dehydrated, less smooth than it used to be, or lacking that natural bounce. - Dr. Laura

WHAT CAUSES "TIRED" SKIN?

Usually this comes down to a few changes happening in the skin at the same time. Hydration levels drop, the barrier becomes a little more fragile, and cell turnover slows down slightly. None of these things are dramatic on their own, but together they can make the complexion look flat, tired or less fresh.

The instinct is often to add stronger products or more steps. However, in reality, tired skin usually responds best to a much simpler approach. Restoring hydration, supporting the barrier and encouraging gentle renewal often makes the biggest difference.

Serums are usually where I start, and add in exfoliating acids and retinoids once the barrier is happy.

HYDRATION: RESTORE BOUNCE & COMFORT

Dehydration is often the main reason skin starts to look tired.

When the skin has enough water, it looks smoother, brighter and more even. When hydration drops, the complexion can look slightly flat.

A hydrating serum layered underneath moisturiser can make a noticeable difference here. Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or ectoin help the skin hold onto water more effectively.

It is a simple step, but it often restores that subtle plumpness that makes skin look fresher.

RENEWAL: HELP DULL SKIN LOOK BRIGHT AGAIN

Sometimes tired-looking skin is less about hydration and more about slow renewal.

When skin cells linger on the surface for longer, the complexion can look dull or uneven. Gentle exfoliating acids help encourage the skin to shed those cells more regularly.

The aim is not strong or aggressive exfoliation. Instead, it is about helping the skin maintain a steady rhythm of renewal so it reflects light more evenly.

Over time this alone can noticeably improve brightness.

BRIGHTENING: BRINGING BACK CLARITY

Environmental stress also plays a role. Daily exposure to UV, pollution and general oxidative stress can gradually affect how bright the skin looks.

Antioxidants such as vitamin C can help counter some of that damage while improving overall radiance.

Used consistently, they help the complexion look clearer and more luminous.

WHERE TO START

If your skin looks tired, you do not need to overhaul your entire routine.

Often the biggest improvement comes from introducing one good hydrating serum and making sure the skin barrier is properly supported.

Once hydration and renewal are back in balance, the complexion usually starts to look fresher again.

Small changes, used consistently, tend to work far better than dramatic routine changes.
